Video of the day: Culk – Salvation

Fresh on the heels of their very well-received self-titled debut album, Culk have released the blood-laden and mysterious video to their latest single, Salvation, which sees lead-singer Sophie Löw sing in almost nonchalant fashion over the lo-fi guitar and minimalistic sounds which the band is slowly becoming known and loved for. Watch it above and get the album here on Siluh Records.

If you have listened to the album yet, then you are sorely missing out.

ABOUT

With playful electronic rock on their EP „»GodGiven«“ LEX AUDREY already surfaced on Austria’s music scene one and a half years ago. Now their first album „No Intention of Changing the World“ finally follows. It’s an album that sometimes stirs up its listener’s thoughts, but then again leaves with a positive vibe.

Lukas Staudinger, Patrick Pillichshammer and Niklas Pichler present an album which is very rich in variety. Although the sounds range from funky bass-lines in „Lost to You“ over heaviness and pathos in „metaphor“ to complete silence in „From Beginning“, LEX AUDREY manage to create their very own sound after all and allow the listener to dive into their world.

On „No Intention of Changing the World“ Niklas Pichler, the mastermind behind LEX AUDREY, writes about various situations in life, but one can recognize his involvement with negative aspects of the influence of digital technology on society as a common theme. As a result, some songs end up having more than just one meaning. By saying „all she’s loving is a picture“ in the ballad „From Beginning“ on the one hand he describes not being able to let go of something, but on the other hand sings about the vanishing distinction between reality and staging. The intro track „Lost to You“ can also be interpreted as a love song for a human or a machine at the same time.

Video of the day: Bilderbuch – LED go

They just can’t help themselves, can they? Just when you think they can’t get any better they go and pull another piece of magic out of their deep hat of creative wonders. This time it is the wonderfully weird and colourful video to the equally eclectic and catchy new tune ‘LED go’ as the band explore what it would be like to play some weird, almost 1980s post-apocalyptic-style game of human pool.

Watch it above, preferably on repeat.

BONUS REMIX

Video of the day: Slide – Floating

Having recently released their second single ‘Floating’, Swedish indie-rock duo Slide release the eye-catching video to accompany the single, directed by Peder Bergstrand (First Aid Kit, Naomi Pilgrim). Watch it in all it grim wintery glory above.

Albin from the band had this to say about the shoot:

”So first of all shooting this video was a fucking freeze man. It might look like New York in the fall type weather but it felt more like Serbian winter. Also the director wanted to end the video with us holding hands. Fortunately it didn’t make the cut. All in all it turned out pretty dreamy and psychedelic – just like the song itself. ”

Video of the day: Nilüfer Yanya – In Your Head

Nilüfer Yanya is an upcoming star in the British music scene. Currently on the cover of Loud And Quiet magazine, and tipped as an Artist to Watch in 2019 by The Guardian, The Independent, i, Q, Dork and The 405. Those are impressive platforms to get a mention on.

With ‘In Your Head’, the foundations seem to be firmly laid for Nilüfer Yanya’s debut album Miss Universe, which will be released on 22 March via ATO Records/PIAS and her confirmation as a rare and utterly original British songwriting talent.

Nilüfer Yanya will be playing at CHELSEA VIENNA on 21 April as part of a huge tour that will see her play show across Europe and the US.

ABOUT

Though she’d been writing songs in her head since she was six, and on the guitar since she was 12, it took a long time for Nilüfer Yanya to work up the courage to show anyone her music. “I knew I wanted to sing, but the idea of actually having to do it was really horrifying,” says the 23-year-old. When she was finally persuaded to do so, by a music teacher in West London where she grew up, she says “it was horrible. I loved it”.

At 18, Nilüfer – who is of Turkish-Irish-Bajan heritage – uploaded a few demos to SoundCloud. Though she’s preternaturally shy, her music – which uniquely blends elements of soul and jazz into intimate pop songs with electronic flourishes and a newly expressed grungy guitar sound – isn’t. And it didn’t take long for it to catch people’s attention. She signed with independent New York label ATO, following three EPs on esteemed london indie label Blue Flowers, and earned a place on the BBC Sound of 2018 longlist. She also supported the likes of The xx, Interpol, Broken Social Scene and Mitski on tour.

Now, Nilüfer is ready to release her debut album, Miss Universe. Though she recorded much of it in the same remote Cornwall studio she used to jam in  as a much younger person, it is bigger and more ambitious than anything she has done before. ‘Angels’, with its muted, harmonic riffs, channels ideas “of paranoid thoughts and anxiety” – a theme that runs through the album, not least in its conceptual spoken word interludes which emanate from a fictional health management company WE WORRY ABOUT YOUR HEALTH™. “You sign up, and you pay a fee,” explains Nilüfer of the automated messages, which are littered through the album and are narrated by the titular Miss Universe. “They sort out all of your dietary requirements, and then they move onto medication, and then maybe you can get a better organ or something… and then suddenly it starts to get a bit weird. You’re giving them more of you and to what end?”

Video of the day: Balthazar – ‘Fever’

Balthazar are back with news that their forthcoming album Fever that will be released on January, 25th, 2019 through Play It Again Sam. Alongside this news, they have shared the album’s title track and accompanying video. And oh boy, it’s an absolute cracker!
It’s clear from the opening notes of the album’s first and title track “Fever” that the five-piece have changed, not least due to their individual musical pursuits over the past few years. Opening with a rolling languid bass riff, “Fever” unfurls into a slinky sunset jam, a swooping string motif adding drama to the funky bustle that fanfares Balthazar into new territory with their fourth album; honest, playful and underpinned with a carefree abandon from two extraordinary songwriters.
Following the band’s self-imposed hiatus, a break that saw frontmen and writing partners Jinte Deprez and Maarten Devoldere pursuing different individual interests from both a personal and creative perspective that has ultimately led the band to fashion their most cohesive album to date.

The break saw Devoldere release two albums of lush, moody art-jazz as Warhaus which, freed from the work constraints of Balthazar, eventually resulted in him ending up at a retreat in Kyrgyzstan. Meanwhile, his best friend since school, Deprez, remained at home in Ghent working in the studio, indulging his love of old-school R&B, and releasing a solo record under the nom de plume J. Bernardt. The freedom to indulge their whims and the result of those solo successes led to the urge to write together again, propelled by a broader artistic horizon and hastened by their mutual respect for each other’s work.
On reconvening the band had no plans, just a simple desire to better their previous works, and to further the band’s story. Both primary songwriters agreed on a less serious vision leaning towards a looser, refreshed sound – less melancholic, but retaining their unerring ability to create a hook-laden armoury. As Devoldere explains; “Some songs felt like classic Balthazar pop songs, others a little chipper, but it wasn’t until we had Fever that we had the foundation for the rest of the album.”
